| HISTORIC AGREEMENT FOR NATURE AND PEOPLE |
| |
"After 4 years of hard work, we’ve now reached the end of the journey. We have before us the fruit of our work. A package that can guide us to halt and reverse biodiversity loss for the benefit of all people." Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology & Environment of China and COP15 President. | |
|
Four years after the start of negotiations, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was finally adopted on Monday 18th of December 2022 in Montreal. Close to 20.000 delegates worked tirelessly over more than 2 weeks. The agreement contains 23 targets aimed at reversing and halting biodiversity loss, including a pledge to protect 30% of land and oceans by 2030. The framework's targets include also ambitious targets to cut global food waste an reduce excess nutrients and the overall risk of pesticide and highly hazardous chemical use. $200 billion per year in domestic and international biodiversity-related funding from all sources – public and private should be mobilized. | LESSONS LEARNED FROM LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARRIBEAN IN AN ECLAC EVENT |
| |
In 2020, as part as our collaboration with ECLAC and WWF International, we supported two axes of action in LAC region countries to: (1) Strengthen regional processes involving all stakeholders and sectors for the identification, analysis and replication of good practices; and (2) Foster capacities of LAC countries to trigger the mainstreaming of biological diversity and innovative governance. Two years later, COP15 gave us the opportunity to share at a side-event the main lessons learned of a study prepared by the Commission on mainstreaming and inclusive governance in the region, in a dialogue with African representatives mobilized by the BIODEV2030 project. | BIODIVERSITY AND ECONOMY: WHAT FUTURE FOR THIS DUO IN THE KUNMING-MONTREAL GBF? |
| |
At this event, experts demonstrated how to help Francophone Parties (40) to integrate nature into their economic decisions, involving the private sector for people and nature. Francophonie is indeed present in several biodiversity hotspots, in more than 250 terrestrial ecoregions and 70 marine ecoregions. With 80 guests in the audience, this side event was moderated by Sylvie GILLET, Orée Director of Development and Biodiversity. At the end of the session, Francophone Parties reflected on strategic orientations for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Learn more here. |

| SCIENCE-BASED ASSESSMENTS AND INCLUSIVE GOVERNANCE FOR MAINSTREAMING AT RIO PAVILION |
| |
The session showcased how the assessment of threats to biodiversity conducted in 16 countries within the BIODEV2030 project was only possible with a science-based approach involving a multi-stakeholders dialogue for mainstreaming biodiversity, showing also a similar experience in Costa Rica supported by the Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework-EU support project. A second segment, based on experiences made by different stakeholders within the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework-EU Support project since 2018, showed how only the integration of the perspectives, experiences and knowledge of all stakeholders can lead to success when it comes to mainstreaming biodiversity.
