The President of the Republic of Colombia recently announced Cali as the host city for CBD COP 16 to be held from 21 October – 1 November 2024. “Now begins the journey to COP 16,” said Ms. Susana Muhammad, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia. Parties gathering in Cali will be expected to accelerate the momentum of action, translate the Biodiversity Plan into resolute national action and mobilize and bolster the means of implementation. Costa Rica setting up priorities for ecosystem restoration To achieve the KM-GBF goals, the National Conservation Areas System of Costa Rica (SINAC), with the support of our project, is leading a process to identify priorities for the implementation of its National Landscape Restoration Strategy. Methodology is being finalised, results are being processed and maps are being produced showing the priorities identified at national level and for each of Costa Rica's 11 conservation areas. It will be a powerful tool to focus on the country's efforts and resources on areas of greater importance, contributing to biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and livelihood sustainability. Uganda - toward biodiversity-inclusive urban planning The project and the CoMSSA Initiative jointly support the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to find ways to address the inextricable links between the biodiversity and climate crises through the revision of the city’s Climate Change Action Plan and ways to align it with global and national biodiversity-related instruments and policies. An assessment of the level of integration of biodiversity-related issues in the different elements of the plan has been conducted and recommendations for further integration of biodiversity in its updated version have been provided. Key results have been presented and validated during an internal meeting with KCCA on Monday, March 18th and agreement on the way forward has been made. Learn more here. |

Morocco - Integration of biodiversity in agri-food systems The Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development (MTEDD) and the Project have decided to join forces in collaboration with the Partnership for Action on the Green Economy (PAGE) in Morocco, with the common objective of integrating biodiversity into the productive sectors of the Kingdom. The project will help guide the country towards the sustainable use of biodiversity in agri-food systems in the Souss Massa region, while addressing the Target 10 of the GBF - The Biodiversity Plan, which aims to ensure that agricultural, aquaculture, fisheries and forestry lands are managed sustainably, in particular through the sustainable use of biodiversity. Transforming Agrifood-systems workshop On March 19th-20th 2024 in Montpellier (France), the Montpellier Process Global Days focus on strengthening the science-policy society interfaces for sustainable food. We are supporting the participation of several experts from the Global South in their attendance to the the Montpellier Global Days. To build on these discussions, our Project will organise a workshop on March 21st dedicated to developing a new narrative to support the effective transformation of agri-food systems in line with the implementation of several targets of the GBF - The Biodiversity Plan. Empowering Change: Unleashing Policy Innovation Towards Global Sustainable Sustainable Consumption The BioTrade Congress co-organized by UNCTAD and partners will take place on March, 25 & 26 in Geneva. The Congress will bring together Trade and Biodiversity experts and practitioners for a high-level exchange on key issues concerning the links between trade and biodiversity. Enhancing Sustainable Finance Instruments Within Brazil’s G20 Presidency A powerful and strategic way to advance the biodiversity agenda is to engage with the G20. Under the motto “Building a just world and a sustainable planet”, Brazil reaffirms its dedication to sustainability and social development. | UN Ocean Decade Conference - April 10-12 The 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate achievements since its last edition in 2021 and set joint priorities for its future. Focused on ‘Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want’, the event will cover the full range of Ocean Decade Challenges including critical issues such as climate change, food security, sustainable management of biodiversity, sustainable ocean economy, pollution, & natural hazards. Hosted by Spain and co-organized with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the conference will take place on 10-12 April 2024 in Barcelona. More information and registration here. |
| SBSTTA 26 and SBI 2024 - May 13-29 The 26th edition of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) will take place in Nairobi/Kenya from May 13th to 18th 2024. After the last edition, delegates from around the world will gather once again to agree on recommendations embracing various topics and elements of the technical base that supports the GBF implementation and the monitoring of its progress. Later on, the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI) will gather on May 21–29th to review the implementation of the GBF in view of the upcoming COP16. Learn more here. |

| International day of forests - March 21 The theme for International Day of Forests 2024 is Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World. The battle against deforestation requires new technological advancements. With 10M ha lost annually due to deforestation and 70M ha affected by fires, these innovations are essential for early warning systems, sustainable commodity production, and empowering Indigenous Peoples through land mapping & climate finance access. Moreover, ecosystem restoration (which is the main topic of Target 2 of The Biodiversity Plan), including reforestation efforts, can significantly contribute to climate mitigation and enhance food security while promoting sustainable wood products. | World Water Day - March 22 The theme of World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’. When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges. World Water Day 2024 is about working together to balance everyone’s needs, with a dedication to ensure no one is left behind, to make water a catalyst for a more peaceful world. Target 3 of the Biodiversity Plan focuses on the conservation of 30% of Land, Waters and Seas, highlighting that at least 30 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas, and at least 30 per cent of marine and coastal areas should be conserved or protected by 2030. | International Earth hour day - March 23 Earth Hour is an initiative to encourage individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take accountability for their ecological footprint and engage in dialogue and resource exchange that provides real solutions to our environmental challenges. It is moment of unity that brings the world together, shines a spotlight on nature loss and the climate crisis, and inspires millions more to act and advocate for urgent change. Last year, over 410,000 hours were given to our planet by supporters in over 190 countries and territories. This year, the aim is to make the #BiggestHourForEarth even bigger. | International Zero Waste day - March 30 Improving collection, recycling and other forms of sound waste management remain an urgent priority. But to solve the waste crisis, we have to treat waste as a resource, which entails reducing waste generation and following the lifecycle approach. During International Day of Zero Waste, Member States, International Organisations, NGOs, the private sector, academia, youth and other stakeholders from the whole-of-society (being the purpose of Target 22 of the Biodiversity Plan) are invited to raise awareness of national, subnational & local zero-waste initiatives and their contribution to achieving sustainable development. The 23 Targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) represent concrete objectives & offer a guidance toward the implementation of The Biodiversity Plan. These targets can appear complex, evoking technical elements and specific scientific terms. To be successfully achieved, GBF objectives have to be understood by everyone.
