SHOWCASING GOOD PRACTICES IN RESTORATION IMPLEMENTATION: INSPIRATIONAL PRE-WORKSHOP IN RIO
Prior to the Convention on Biological Diversity's Restoration Workshop organized in Rio de Janeiro from 6th to 8th of November 2019, the Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU Support organized a preparatory workshop on “Integrated Local Approaches to Ecosystems Restoration Governance".
The main objective was to showcase the contribution of local actors, private sector and non state actors to restoration initiatives. Successful experiences of multi-actors coordination in restoration initiatives provide inspirational material in terms restoration governance for the post 2020 biodiversity framework.

Many CBD National Focal Points and national experts may not have fully explored the strategic contribution of local and subnational governments, private companies and other non-state actors to restoration in multi-stakeholder land-use and protection mosaics, as a mean to create corridors connecting several OECMs Biosphere Reserves and developing Area Based Conservation Measures (ABCM).

This pre-workshop was organized at the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro and was attended by approximately 100 participants and 15 panelists among whom we found:

  • International Institute of Sustainability – PUC Rio
  • UN Biodiversity – SCBD
  • European Union Delegation to Brazil
  • World Resource Institute Brazil
  • ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability
  • European Commission
  • World Resources Institute Brazil
