Update on recent & forthcoming events
This webinar edition introduced updates to the roadmap to COP15 and the CBD Informal Advisory Group on Mainstreaming of Biodiversity. It also reported back on the Daring Cities Urban Leaders Forum and the EU Green Week event Catalyzing South Africa local governments’ action for the post-2020 biodiversity framework. Finally it also presented upcoming events including LoCS4Africa 2020 Congress.

The event provided strategic insight on the Informal Advisory Group on Mainstreaming of Biodiversity achievements including the close linkages it established with Business Forum, Global Partnership on Business & Biodiversity, Action Agenda and recent improvements in consistently integrating mainstreaming in the targets and goals, embracing it for “everybody mobilizing people everywhere”, and avoiding prescriptiveness while allowing sectors to contribute building on existing means and co-developing a collaborative platform. Yet, vertical and horizontal mainstreaming integration could still better be integrated in the post-2020 biodiversity framework through its recognition at agreement’s chapeau level and the finetuning of the long term approach to mainstreaming adopting the nexus approach promoted by IPBES, and foreseeing a budget to support biodiversity values in local planning.

“The Daring Cities high-level event was a resounding success, with great recognition by all partners climate and nature crisis go hand in hand.” Kobie Brand, ICLEI CBC Director

Insight was also provided on the EU Green Week event organized as part of the EU-SA Post 2020 Dialogue Facility by the European Committee of Regions, South Africa’s Department of Environment Forestry and Fisheries, ICLEI CBC and the Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU support project. The event aimed at catalyzing local governments action for the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. It enabled South African District municipalities and 8 metropolis to engage with their EU counterparts on the role and contribution of local government in achieving national and global biodiversity targets, and strategies for raising ambition and advancing uptake and implementation.

The webinar extensively covered the multiple activities that took place across the Urban October month.

The ongoing Local Climate Solutions for Africa (LoCS4Africa) 2020 Congress will bring on that momentum online from November 3rd to 12Th, 2020 with key sessions including on financing for nature-based climate change adaptation.

Register now to the next webinar to take place on the 3rd of December 2020 at: 10am CAT and 3pm CAT
