Third EU-China workshop on biodiversity – Beijing

EU-China Dialogue
Finding common ground on for a new Post-2020 global biodiversity framework
The EU – China Environment Project organized an EU-China dialogue to exchange views on topical aspects of the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Representatives from Switzerland and Norway were invited to discuss the 2030 mission, targets, assessment, reporting and review issues together with representatives from China, the European Commission and the European Member States. A member of our Project team was also invited to attend the workshop.

The event aimed at finding common ground on important issues related to the negotiations for a new Post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The third EU-China Workshop contributed to define a more concrete representation of potential elements for the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Several common points as well as a need for further dialogue and coordination were identified. The event enabled a better understanding of Chinese initiatives and ambition for the Post-2020 era that integrates spatial planning with environmental protection and sustainable development. It also made it possible to identify concrete points where China and the EU agree on the next steps and input for the Post-2020 biodiversity framework.

An Asian or South-East Asian workshop could help facilitate the exchange and development of a regional ambition for the post-2020 era. It could also be an opportunity to explore the questions raised during the dialogue and further reflect on them.
