Special session — 40º anniversary of the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean

The Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean marked its 40th anniversary with a special session in Costa Rica on January 27 and 28, 2022. The meeting strengthened regional cooperation in the face of the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. More information here

Aligning Public Development Banks with the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and WWF organized the Webinar: “Aligning Public Development Banks with the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework”. During this webinar, The Biodiversity Consultancy (TBC) presented the results of the study“Public Development Banks And Biodiversity: How PDBs can align with the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework” conducted with WWF France. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Development Bank of the Philippines then joined a panel to discuss the different levers of action for development banks to align with the Global Biodiversity Framework. Introduction to the co-chairs’ reflections document – CBD webinar

World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on 2 February, aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and planet. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. More information here

The fifth edition of the One Planet Summit, totally dedicated to the Ocean, was held in Brest from February 9 to 11, 2022, as part of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union and with the support of the United Nations. More information here

EU – Africa Union Summit – Brussels

The heads of state or government of the member states of the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) met for the sixth European Union – African Union summit in Brussels on 17 and 18 February 2022. The meeting was co-chaired by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel and the President of Senegal and the Chairperson of the AU, Macky Sall. More information here

Fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2)

The first session of UNEA-5 (UNEA-5.1) was held online with an agenda focusing on urgent and procedural decisions. UNEA-5.1 was prepared at the fifth meeting of the Open-Ended Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, organized online on 15-16 February 2021. Substantive matters that require in-depth negotiations were deferred to a resumed in-person session of UNEA-5 on 28 February – 2 March 2022 (UNEA-5.2). UNEA-5.2 will be followed by a Special Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-SS) devoted to commemorate of the 50th anniversary of the creation of UNEP in 1972. More information here

UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration: From commitments to actions for nature

On 28 February 2022, from 18:30 – 19:30 East African Time, a high-level flagship side event was organized at the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) to see how countries are raising their ambitions and taking action on ecosystem restoration. More information here

UNEA – 5: Flagship Side Event for the Resumed Fifth Session of the UN Environment Assembly

Convened by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this flagship side event highlighted how actors across government and society can contribute to ensuring the effective and immediate implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework in an inclusive manner. Panelists discussed the policies, programmes, multi-stakeholder action, and partnerships needed to advance an early implementation. More information here

World Environment Day

The Government of the Sweden hosted the World Environment Day 2022 in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The year 2022 marks 50 years since the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment – the 1972 Stockholm Conference that led to the creation of UNEP and designating 5 June every year as World Environment Day. Fourth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework – Nairobi, Kenya

The CBD hosted the 4th Open Ended Working Group (OEWG4) on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). 1000 negotiators from 195 States plus the EU gathered in Nairobi to advance negotiations on the GBF’s text. Final adoption is now expected for December in Montreal, Canada at the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP15). More information here

UN Ocean Conference

The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, came at a critical time as the world is seeking to address the many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies. International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

There are over 476 million indigenous peoples living in 90 countries across the world, accounting for 6.2 per cent of the global population. Indigenous peoples are the holders of a vast diversity of unique cultures, traditions, languages and knowledge systems. World Biodiversity Summit

The Summit was the first to forge a global public-private partnership that bridged the climate and biodiversity agendas.
