This was an opportunity to inform and exchange on the latest advances and opportunities on Natural Capital Accounting in Africa in the context of the process towards a post-2020 framework for biodiversity.
On the 13th and 14th of May 2019, a key workshop took place in the preparation of the post-2020 strategic global biodiversity framework. It gathered representatives from EU and China for a fruitful bilateral dialogue on several key topics.
Participants discussed the opportunities and challenges for the post-2020 global framework resulting from the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 in the region.
This dialogue co-organized by the European Commission and the Ministry of the Environment in Japan enabled to share perspectives on these issues, including perspectives from negotiators, business, NGOs representatives, and experts from the United Nations University.
The project team participated in the first international summit The Nature of Cities (TNOC) to mobilize cities, metropolitan areas and subnational governments to instil a global dynamism that will support the signature of an ambitious agreement at the COP 15.
The 2019 Trondheim Conference addressed the challenges of achieving the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity, explored pathways for the transformational changes needed, and contributed to the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
Building on the recommendations of the roadmap signed in Paris last June, this was an opportunity to further consolidate and develop the recommendations that were adopted and integrate the metropolis participating to the summit as signatories.
The 18th edition of CITES conference debates involved what concrete elements can CITES bring to the Post2020 biodiversity framework and how it can best reinforce the CITES Strategic Vision 2021-2030.
Participants engaged in a first discussion on national plans in view of COP15 and presented three technical issues: access and benefit sharing (ABS) and digital sequence information (DSI) as well as natural capital accounting.
Prior to the first OEWG session, our project facilitated an expert meeting in cooperation with the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) on intergenerational equity and its transposition in the CBD context.
11-19 September 2019, MAB Youth Forum Changbaishan, Youth come together in China to share their commitment for biodiversity
176 young people from 83 countries gathered in the Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve in China for the opening of the 2nd MAB Youth Forum. UNESCO has brought them together to empower them and work together under the theme ‘Committed to Biodiversity’ towards the COP15.

The goal of the UN Climate Action Summit was to ensure countries are aware of the 2020 calendar, that the global focus on climate gains momentum, and to monitor countries transitional investments from fossil fuels to renewables.
24-26 September 2019, CEPAL Santiago, First meeting of experts from Latin American biodiversity knowledge institutions
ECLAC and IDDRI organized a 3-days meeting of experts from Latin American biodiversity knowledge institutions or think tanks to take stock of ongoing mobilisation in the region, and organize future collective work.
35 participants engaged in this Finland EU-Presidency workshop held in Brussels. It brought together officials from EU Member States and non-Member States. The general objective of this combined event was to generate horizontal exchanges between CBD COP 15 negotiators in the run-up to the COP 15.
The city of Lille (France) welcomed National Focal Point of CBD as part of a “Nature en Ville” study visit. The delegates were able to apprehend local biodiversity policy initiatives such as urban farms, shared garden or a climate change-adapted district. Walking around the city, delegates discovered various innovations to support sustainable development solutions in the cities.
The side event “Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Methods: contributions to the sustainable use of biodiversity in the post-2020 Framework” took place at the Pabellón UE RedParques during the III Latin American and Caribbean Congress of Protected Areas in Lima, Peru, on 17 October 2019.
On October 28th and 29th, Post2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU Support, Future Earth and IRD co-organized a workshop in Rabat, Morocco on sustainable production & consumption. Through brainstorming sessions and debates, the participants worked on co-building an action agenda to use science and sustainability to better reach Sustainable Development Goals.
The EU – China Environment Project organized an EU-China dialogue to exchange views on topical aspects of the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The event aimed at finding common ground on important issues related to the negotiations for a new Post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
We organized a pre-workshop at the occasion of CBD workshop on ecosystem restoration targets in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which provided a much-needed opportunity for CBD Parties and international partners working on restoration to discuss the role of ecosystem restoration and created a common understanding about the issue.
Post2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU Support organized a one-week preparatory workshop at UNESCO HQ in the perspective of the Paris Peace Forum held right after. The objective was to facilitate coordination between youth leaders from different sectors of society. News available soon!
The Paris Peace Forum was the opportunity to launch our campaign promoting Youth as the new major player when it comes to global negotiations toward COP15. The Project partnered with GYBN to voice youth environmental preoccupations for the future, and significantly increased campaign’s visibility. News available soon…
The event, organized during Montreal SBSTTA on November 26th, explored the relevance of setting a unique apex target for the post-2020 biodiversity framework, or a small number of overarching targets, with a view of translating the post 2020 biodiversity framework into action.
Through this side event organized during Montreal SBSTTA23 on November 26th, the project deepened its cooperation with ICLEI on the topics related to Cities and Local Authorities and their action on biodiversity and to further implement this cooperation.
This side-event held in Montreal during SBSTTA on November 28th presented the first reflections, products and the next steps of a collective work undertaken by high-level biodiversity LAC experts from biodiversity knowledge and management institutions, governments (including negotiators), academia and from organizations with a regional or global perspective, met at ECLAC headquarters (Santiago, Chile), to share their concrete experiences for the strengthening of science and policy interactions and the development of a regional vision for the post-2020 framework.
The side-event organized on November 27th during SBSTTA in Montreal was the occasion to showcase the work and significance of youth in bringing about a strong post-2020 biodiversity framework. It focused on a series of exchanges and presentations in which stakeholder discussed several topics, including: building a large youth movement ahead of COP15 and beyond the biodiversity silo; integrating the concept of intergenerational equity in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework; a youth agenda and roadmap towards COP15, as well as the reasons why young people should be taken more into account in the CBD decision-making process.
This side-event held during SBSTTA on November 29th raised awareness on science-policy platform messages to participating decision makers including CBD national focal points. It provided grounds for a more effective communication and integration of science messages into policy making for transformational change.
During UNFCCC COP25 held in Madrid, the Project held a side-event on December 5th that raised awareness on the importance of addressing together climate change and biodiversity loss as inseparable threats to humankind. The output of the side-event discussions was on the agenda of the high-level event on ‘scaling up climate action through circular economy and nature-based solutions’ planned on December 10th at COP25.
