| ACHIEVING VITAL GOALS & TARGETS TO REVERSE BIODIVERSITY LOSS |

| During CBD SBI-4 in Nairobi, negotiators have set the table for talks at the upcoming CBD COP 16 in Colombia. Addressing finance, high tech biology, Indigenous Peoples’ engagement and more, SBI4 announced progress on several fronts in worldwide efforts to achieve the ambitious goals and targets for 2030. Actions to “Invest and Collaborate for Nature” were central to the SBI’s discussions, with recommendations forwarded to COP 16 on resource mobilization and technical and scientific cooperation. Implementation of the Biodiversity Plan at national levels is to be shaped by National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) that translate The Plan’s 23 action targets into national priorities. White Paper “Urban Planning for Sustainable Territorial Development in Africa" Written by two experts, M. Luc Gnacadja, former Minister of Environment of Benin, and M. Oliver Hillel, former Programme Officer at the CBD in charge of the engagement of States, Regions and cities, this new publication is a great resource to explore innovative approaches to urban planning. It focuses on the resolution of the “two-citites paradox”, on urban informalities and the need to prioritize sustainability for territorial development in Africa, in line with The Biodiversity Plan. |

Launching the reflections on transforming agri-food systems leading up to COP16 “Transforming Agrifood-Systems for People and Nature” was the focus of a collaborative Workshop organized within the Montpellier Global Days last March and which gathered participants from more than 10 countries in the South of France. Drawing on experiences from a diversity of perspectives and stakeholders, this workshop intended to help participants jointly develop key messages for a new narrative on an effective transition to sustainable agri-food systems. |

Integrating biodiversity into agri-food systems in Morocco Last May, a new initiative ‘Integrating biodiversity into agri-food systems’ was launched in Morocco to address the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the Souss-Massa region. With the support of our project, Morocco aims to integrate biodiversity into agricultural production processes, in line with GBF Target 10 and the UN SDGs. Learn more about this project here. |

| The regional centers for The Biodiversity Plan implementation At the fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 4) of the CBD in Nairobi last May, the Parties selected 18 regional organizations spanning the globe in a multilateral push to bolster the implementation of the GBF, The Biodiversity Plan, through science, technology and innovation. | #WaterWise EU Campaign Within the EU Greek Week held from May 29 to June 5, the EU Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) launched a campaign “Water Wise EU” to encourage people to see water differently. With the moto “See water differently”, this campaign will run until the end of the year and aims at explaining why Europe’s water systems are under increasing stress, but also highlighting solutions to transform the way water is managed, used and valued. |

| Desertification and Drought Day 2024 - June 17 This year, the theme of the Desertification and Drought Day was “United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future”. The global observance event on 17 June, also marked the 30th anniversary of UNCCD, and brought together world leaders, youth and personalities from academia and civil society to showcase a strong ambition to be united for land, ahead of the largest-ever UN conference on land and drought in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in December 2024 (UNCCD COP16). |
| High Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change - June 8-9 In advance of the Third UN Ocean Conference to be held in Nice (France) in June 2025, a stakeholder meeting organised in San José, Costa Rica on June 8 and 9, convened to generate national, regional, and global solutions in an inclusive manner, with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. The meeting served as a platform to exchange best practices and successful experiences related to ocean governance and health. #Immersed |
