Getting ready: an historic moment ahead of us at COP15

COP15 in Montreal should be the historic moment that we - as the overall nature, climate, environment and development community at large - have been waiting for long.This moment is the adoption of the transformative Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) that we need to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

In Montreal, our project will again engage delegates and stakeholders via a large variety of activities. At a core of our presence will be a joint stand #411 with the BIODEV project. This stand will offer a space for informal dialogues with a series of experts and non-state actors in a dedicated slot called Rendez-Vous For Nature. More information here.

Walking the talk towards a transformative GBF (event #4578)

On the 7th December at 18:15 UTC-5 in the IGOs Meeting Room (514B), we will welcome high-level personalities from different sectors of conservation, business, finance, subnational and local governments, youth and the climate community.

This side event will give the opportunity to pannelists to provide insights, reflections and proposals to the still not conclusive targets in view of their prompt and effective implementation in the Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15.

Lessons from Latin America and the Caribbean: biodiversity mainstreaming & governance for transformative changes (event #4670)

On the 10th of December at 13:15 UTC-5, our project supports an event co-organized with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in the JUSCANZ Meeting Room (510C).

This side-event will highlight the main findings, lessons learned and recommendations of ECLAC’s study on biodiversity mainstreaming and innovative governance.

High-level event of the UN Regional Commissions (event # 4514)

On the 15^th of December at 13:15 UTC−5 in JUSCANZ Meeting Room (510C) our project will support a high-level event of the Regional Economic Commissions (REC) at CBD COP15.

It will give REC representatives a space to showcase their collective transformative actions and best practice examples in their respective regions. It also aims to show plans for the inclusion of stakeholders to contribute to the implementation of the Post-2020 framework.

Cities with Nature, the partnership platform for ambitious nature actions

On the 14th of December at 15:30-17:30 UTC-5 in the Subnational Government and Cities Pavilion, we will participate in a session organized by Cities With Nature partners and local governments. The session aims at sharing examples on their nature commitments, highlighting how Cities With Nature catalyzes experiences, commitments and ambitious actions.

Our project will share experiences in supporting ICLEI and its partners for the mobilization of Subnational and Local Governments for biodiversity in the run up to COP15.

FROM COP27 TO COP15
THE CLIMATE BIODIVERSITY NEXUS

COP27: The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the climate-biodiversity nexus

At a critical time for both the climate and biodiversity negociations, our project organized in partnership with IDDRI, ICLEI, Cities and Regions in the UNFCCC Process and the Scottish government an event at UNFCCC COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh on November 14th. Subnational governments and cities all over the world must respond to both the climate and the biodiversity crises. Growing urban sustainability awareness is encouraging, as cities are greening their urban fabric to help halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Our side event enabled an insightful discussion with Basile van Havre, Francis Ogwal, Karin Zaunberger, Alexandra Deprez, Kobie Brand, Gavin Edwards, Michael Ofosuhene-Wise about the key role of subnational and local governments and non-state actors in implementing a transformative GBF at COP15. TRANSFORMATIVE ACTIONS
NATIONAL PERSPECTIVES

Brazil - Our project supports the National Association of Municipalities and Environment (ANAMMA) in mobilizing South-American actors for more sustainable cities in the Continent.The Forum was held during UNFCCC COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh to strengthen South-American alliances in combating climate change and reversing biodiversity loss.

Participants from different regions of Brazil and sectors of society - representatives of municipal governments, companies, civil society organizations, media, academia, educational entities and judicial bodies, such as the Public Prosecutor's Office - were part of this participatory process. Costa Rica - Environmental institutions and organizations entered into a period of study to establish the country's priorities in terrestrial environmental restoration and marine conservation. This is made possible thanks to the joint work between the Conservation Areas System (SINAC), our project and the Costa Rica Por Siempre Foundation.

The results will serve as an inspiring example to other nations in their own agendas in implementing their international biodiversity commitments.The first workshop of this project took place on November 8. Subsequently, several participatory meetings will be organized.
