National consultation workshop on Post-2020 – Mexico

Mexico’s multilevel dialogue on the Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework
Defining Mexico’s national contributions to the CBD Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
On January 29th to 30th, shortly after the publication of CBD Zero Draft document, a national consultation workshop was organized in Mexico City by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). The objective of the workshop was to identify Mexico's national contributions to the Post-2020 global Biodiversity Framework.

This workshop, focused on analysing and identifying Mexico’s contributions to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework in the negotiation process leading to CBD COP15 next October (Kunming, China).

This participatory event enabled the identification of new challenges and opportunities to identify new national objectives when it comes to conservation, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity for 2021-2030.

With over 200 participants, full media coverage and the participation of relevant government and state institutions, academia, local communities and indigenous peoples, youth and women representatives, NGO’s and the private sector, among others, the event was a full success in raising the bar for more ambitious targets in the upcoming negotiations for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework in the OEWG-3 and up to CBD COP15.

All involved institutions and the most relevant stakeholders are aware of the importance of the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework for the further conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in Mexico in the post-2020 era. Inputs from all relevant stakeholders in view of the zero draft were assessed and a full synthesis of their comments and impressions for each goal and target will build the base of the Mexican ambition for an impactful post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Participants expressed their satisfaction with the opportunity to be heard and contribute to the development of the framework.

“As part of the project, our utmost interest is to foster the dialogue between different institutions, organizations and all stakeholders in view of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. This event embodies perfectly the principle of dialogue and outreach we are seeking, and we are therefore proud and honored to be part thereof and thank the organizers for their trust and for the invitation to collaborate in its preparation.” Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU Support team member

A second national workshop will build upon this experience and give all stakeholders the opportunity to be an active part of the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

A possible dissemination of the experience and know how gained during the event will be explored between the project and its Mexican counterparts.
