Cities and subnational governments territories are tightly connected to biodiversity. Great initiatives have already been taken by cities decision-makers all around the world, with the support of local communities and civil society organizations, to protect biodiversity and benefit from it.
The Post2020 Biodiversity Framework - EU Support works hand in hand with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability
, a global network of more than 1,750 local and subnational governments committed to sustainable urban development, and its Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC) embedded in ICLEI Africa Regional Office.
As the only subnational government network accredited as an observer of all three Rio Conventions (UNFCCC, UNCCD & CBD), ICLEI is a leading partner of the Global Partnership on Local and Subnational Action for Biodiversity working with the Group of Leading Subnational Governments Toward Aichi Biodiversity Targets (GoLS), the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), and Regions4 Sustainable Development (Regions4) to advance its global biodiversity advocacy agenda and foster commitments by local and subnational stakeholders towards post-2020.
The primary goal of our joint advocacy work is to ensure that the voice of local and subnational governments is heard loudly throughout the consultation and negotiation process leading up to, and at COP 15; and that local and subnational governments are meaningfully recognized as key implementers of the global biodiversity agenda over the coming decades.
As such, ICLEI is working to mobilize its constituency to engage and participate in the consultation and negotiation process, with the aim of shaping the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework
