India

description

India is one of the world’s recognized mega-diverse countries, home to nearly 7-8% of all recorded species and four of the 34 identified global biodiversity hotspots.

However, the country is facing habitat loss, natural renewable resources over-exploitation, shrinking genetic diversity, invasive alien species, declining forest resource base, climate change and desertification.

As part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), India launched the Green India Mission (GIM) with the goal of doubling the area for afforestation / ecorestoration to 20 million ha, improving ecosystem services, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration in 10 million ha, and increasing forest-based livelihood incomes for 3 million forests-dependent households over a ten-year period.

With the varying socio-cultural milieu and often conflicting demands of various stakeholders, there is an urgent need to increase and accelerate efforts for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, as well as the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.

In partnerships with relevant authorities and stakeholders, and in line with the National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan (NBSAP) and the GBF, our project will explore supporting the integration of key elements of an adopted GBF at regional and sub-national level.
