China

description

China is one of the world’s mega-biodiverse countries. The forest cover accounts for more than 20 % of its total land area, and the stock volume of forest plantations may be one of the world’s largest.

Rapid urbanization and industrialization have increased pressure on species’ and ecosystems’ habitats and health. The negative impacts on biodiversity have been exacerbated by pollutions, and overexploitation of natural renewable resources.

In charge of the COP 15 Presidency, China is engaged in achieving ambitious goals for the GBF. China’s constitution was amended in 2018 to include the goal of becoming an ecological civilization. Additionally, China’s NBSAP has been updated for the next two decades (2011-2030). The strategy’s guiding principles are fourfold: conservation, sustainable use, public participation, and benefit-sharing.

In addition to these important elements, the capacity for public awareness-raising and education on environmental issues could be one of the areas of interest to implement a transformative GBF in the country.

In partnership with relevant stakeholders, our project will focus on identifying best practices in three main areas: green city development, nature-positive spatial planning, and ecosystem restoration.
