Representatives from the Governments of the region, but also a large number of NGOs and other organizations, such as the World Bank, were present and provided input to pressing questions on the structure and general outline of the new deal for nature and people from a Latin-American perspective.
This unique perspective provided new angles to the existing ideas on the framework and put to the forefront aspects related to IPLCs, Women and Youth’s contribution to the new global framework.
Furthermore, issues around the connection between human rights and biodiversity conservation and sustainable use were also raised.
Especially innovative was the notion presented by some participants that Latin America is the sub-continent of sustainable use and that the management of protected areas at the local level is one of the keys to a successful conservation.
